Before backpacks are packed and alarm clocks return, take time to soak up the beauty of one of nature's most spectacular seasons. Across the Windsor-Essex region, the final weeks of summer bring an incredible display of colour, wildlife and wonder. Goldenrod and asters brighten trailside meadows and forest edges, monarch butterflies drift through the air, and young barn swallows prepare for their first journey south. Watch for turtle hatchlings making their way to water, the first iconic V-formations of Canada geese overhead, and even the mesmerizing dance of thousands of starlings gathering in the evening sky. These seasonal highlights can be enjoyed at many of the region’s 18 public conservation areas, including Holiday Beach, Hillman Marsh, the John R. Homestead, and along more than 80 kilometres of connected Greenway trails. Each offers unique opportunities to connect with nature before summer slips away.
“As the pace of life begins to shift toward fall, we’re inviting families to challenge themselves to enjoy the WE Conservation Challenge,” explains Danielle Stuebing, ERCA’s Director of Communications. “Whether you're hiking a trail, visiting a marsh lookout, packing a picnic, or simply watching the sunset, every outing is a chance to create lasting memories outdoors.”
The concept is simple. People of all ages are invited to download the WE Conservation Challenge checklist from our website at https://essexregionconservation.ca/weconservation before their next conservation area visit. “See how many late-summer signs you can spot before school starts,” Stuebing says.
Once you have completed all the items on your checklist, fill out your online ballot for a chance to win a Seasonal Pass so that you and your family can enjoy adventures like this all year round! The challenge closes on Labour Day and the winner will be drawn at 4pm on Tuesday, September 8.
The Essex Region Conservation Authority is a public sector organization established by the Province of Ontario in 1973 and governed by local municipalities. For more than 50 years, it has delivered local programs and services that further the conservation, restoration, development and management of natural resources in watersheds in the Windsor-Essex-Pelee Island region.
