Geomatics Technician – Special Projects (SGE) ~ 9 month contract

The Geomatics Technician - Special Projects (SGE) creates, maintains, modifies, and disseminates data and applications related to GIS; and provides technical support to natural heritage, natural hazards and water quality related management programs and projects. This position reports to the Director, Conservation Services.  One of the main objectives this position is the development of region wide Phragmites population mapping in cooperation with multiple partners.

This position is classified as a ‘Special Grant Employee’ as the tasks associated with this position are funded in whole or in part through Federal and Provincial agency funding sources.  The period of this contract is mid/end July 2025, through March 31, 2026.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains and disseminates spatial data, provides support for end-users, and generates maps and other GIS reports and information products.

  • Performs geospatial data building, including gathering and importing geospatial data from various sources, creating new datasets, and ensuring data accuracy and consistency.

  • Conducts programmatic and manual analysis and creates reports and thematic maps on the data within the GIS. Selects cartographic elements needed for effective presentation of information. Contributes GIS-related technical information to reports and studies of the Authority when required.

  • Undertakes the conversion, import and export data in and out of the GIS system. Enters data into GIS databases using techniques such as coordinate geometry, keyboard entry of tabular data, manual digitizing of maps, scanning or automatic conversion to vectors, or conversion of other sources of digital data.

  • Ensures that quality assurance/quality control on new or revised data conforms to standards laid out in the Geodatabase, or any other applicable standard or policy

  • Creates and documents procedures relating to geospatial data records and metadata definitions

  • Conducts field surveys and data collection using GPS and other surveying and sampling equipment.

  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities consistent with the position as required.


MINIMUM SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A college diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Ecology, Biology, Geography or related field with specialization and or certification in Geographic information Systems (GIS), is required.

  • 2 years experience and knowledge with GIS databases and editing using ESRI ArcGIS Pro software

  • Experience in analysing spatial data in a municipal/CA environment (i.e. familiarity with parcel, infrastructure information systems, natural heritage features, etc.)  and translating client requirements into appropriate GIS reports and thematic maps

  • Knowledge of SQL Databases, ArcGIS Enterprise Server, Geocortex, and familiarity with SQL Server/spatial data is an asset

  • Proficient with various software applications (SharePoint, MS- Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, Teams), Zoom and other web-conferencing software, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.

  • Strong organizational, time management and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Must possess an MTO Class “G” Driver’s licence in good standing


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Typically, Monday through Friday, up to thirty-five (35) hours per week, from 8:30am to 4:00 pm. May occasionally be required to work additional hours or adjust working schedule to attend meetings and/or meet business needs of the Authority. There is no guarantee of full-time hours and this position may be subject to temporary layoffs from time to time and/or alternate work schedules should business interruptions occur or project funding or scope be reduced or terminated.

  • Hazards and Risks: normal office environment, as well as occasional fieldwork with exposure to moderately uncomfortable factors including, working in hot and cold temperatures, dirt and dust, working around noxious weeds, stinging insects and working in/near water.

  • Environmental conditions: work regularly requires extended periods of visual and mental concentration of 2 to 4 hours duration, prolonged sitting (and associated physical strain), manual dexterity, accuracy and attention to detail. Duties may involve on-site meetings at potentially remote locations in adverse weather conditions where walking on uneven terrain, through wetlands, near watercourses, etc. may be necessary.
